why is this important?

At times healthcare professionals  forget the importance of the psychological and emotional aspects that impact on a woman's ability to mother and yet research into infant development continues to highlight the importance of the mother's psychological and emotional wellbeing during pregnancy and early motherhood.

The ability of the caregiver to regulate (not suppress) her own emotions has been shown to contribute significantly to the infant’s sense of security and capacity for healthy emotional development.

The counsellor integrates mindfulness skills as part of the work with mothers and pregnant women. There is now a large body of evidence indicating that the development of mindfulness skills contributes to increased positive emotion, decreased negative emotion such as depression and anxiety, healthy stress management and relationship skills and improved emotional regulation.
